Tails From Corinth

Welcome to the gritty reality of Corinth Alcorn Animal Shelter in Corinth, Mississippi. It's not just a shelter; it's a refuge for souls battered by life's cruelties. These are the faces of abandonment, the whispers of neglect, and the silent pleas for a second chance. Many become the faces of TLC rescue as they’re one of our most active shelter partners.

After an eye-opening & gut-wrenching trip to the shelter, they undeniably need our help. We can help by sharing the stories and struggles of the many lives in waiting, with everyone who will listen. We can help by raising awareness and support for the people and dogs of Corinth Acorn Shelter.

Welcome to the journey where we face the raw truth of their existence, shedding light on their struggles, and extending a lifeline to a partner in dire need. Let's not turn away from the darkness that surrounds them but instead, let's confront it head-on with empathy, action, and a fierce determination to make a difference.

“Nothing could prepare you for walking through room after room, to see one dog after another, in every crevice of the place. The sound is ear shattering. The smell is nauseating. The looks on their faces are heartbreaking.”

THIS is why rescue ~ THIS is why we foster ~ THIS is why TLC does what we do.

Connecting with Corinth

TLC thrives because of the community around us and their unwavering support. We return that support to our rescue partners who help us coordinate the transportation and care of dogs in need. Many of our rescued dogs come from the Corinth Alcorn Animal Shelter in Corinth, Mississippi.

This is a shelter that is doing the absolute best they can with the hand they were dealt. Unfortunately, that hand is an underfunded, understaffed shelter that is facing unimaginable intake, owner surrenders, disinterest or unavailable spay/neuter programs, and more.

Some of our TLC leaders traveled to Corinth Alcorn to offer support in the form of dog evaluations, manual labor, process improvements, administrative support, etc. Even though the Corinth Alcorn Animal Shelter is in a brand new building, they are still battling a systemic problem that’s left them overcapacity & overwhelmed in an impossible situation. We may not see it every day, but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

“The saddest thing is the constant ringing phone, asking when they can come by and surrender their unwanted pet. Or when they can bring the ‘puppies we found on our property last night. As we behaviorally assessed dogs, yesterday, outside, we saw car after car coming to the shelter with dogs in their arms to drop off.”

Southern Stories

Clarice

Clarice had been in the shelter for over 5 years. Her story is the epitome of an overworked system. Lost in the shuffle of counts and moved to a new shelter, she was given a new name and her wait in a shelter started over again.

Bisque & Chowder

Would you believe that this precious face was found in a box zip tied closed and thrown in a landfill? At just 3 months old, these puppies were quite literally thrown away. A man who stopped at the landfill as a part of his job came across the box and saved their lives. Puppies, who were part of human cruelty at such a young age, will be given the chance to thrive because they were rescued.

Mom protecting her puppies/never feeling relaxed

The moms are giving everything they can to support the survival of their pups. They are desperate, tired, stressed, and looking for hope. Hope that someone will take them out of a loud, packed, sometimes scary room and let them thrive in a quieter space.

Pickwick

As our team drove to the shelter, they witnessed a car discard a puppy on the side of the road and drive off. Meet Pickwick, whose story is unfortunately all too common.

Stanley

Underfunded programs means that if a shelter dog becomes bored and resorts to chewing their “belongings”, those items are not replaced. Stanley chewed his bed and was left to sleep on the concrete floor.

Fostering Change

Foster

One of the best ways to help is to consider opening your home to a foster dog in need. Because these dogs are spending most of their day in a kennel or crate, being in your home will be like living in a Five-Star resort! Being in a crate for 8 hours while you’re at work is nothing compared to the conditions they live in every day in the shelter. All they ask for is someone to give them love.

Every dog comes off transport in their own way. Some are timid and shy and just need that special person to bring their true personality out. Others come out excited to begin their new lives. No matter which type you bring home, fosters are essential in finding these dogs their best family.

Foster math means every dog you take in could save many others. Taking in one dog can mean someone else can take in siblings. And that can free up another foster family to take in a mother and her litter. And that can allow many spots to open up in the shelter.

Our greatest fostering need is with adult dogs ages 1 - 3 years old roughly 50lbs or larger.

Adopt

Adoption saves lives. Rescues take in dogs who have nowhere else to go and give them a chance at a new life. We strive towards a future where every stray has a home and unwanted litters are a thing of the past. Countless wonderful dogs, through no fault of their own, endure homelessness and neglect, yearning for a loving family to cherish them forever. We aim to connect them with loving families who will give them the care and affection they deserve for the rest of their lives

We understand that every dog is unique and valuable, far more than just a combination of breed traits. Every dog, whether a playful puppy or a seasoned senior, deserves a chance at happiness. Adoption not only enriches the lives of these dogs but also brings immeasurable joy to the families who welcome them into their hearts.

Adoption enriches lives. Adoption brightens lives. Adoption saves lives.

Donate

As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, we run soley on your donations to support our ongoing efforts to save the lives to dogs in need. From vet care to foster supports to training support, we cannot do what we do without your generous support.

Corinth unfortunately is struggling to support their overcapacity population largely due to a lack of funding and support. Your donations allow us to support Corinth in a bigger way by taking as many dogs as possible, many of which are large breed adult dogs, and opening up space in their kennels that will ultimately save another life.

“These posts are here to show you where TLC’s journey begins. Quite literally, dogs are sleeping on cement floors or under flimsy roofs out in the elements. They don’t get to experience the plush dog beds or treats when they’ve done something good or the ability to just get away from the noise and relax. If you have been unsure about fostering, I promise you it is worth it.”
